28 April 2025 | General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU)

The Foundation for Innovative Social Development (FISD), in collaboration with the Faculty of Criminal Justice at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), proudly hosted the Asphaleia 2025 – Blue Umbrella Day Campaign on Violence Against Boys on 28th April 2025.

This impactful event marked a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s efforts to raise awareness and drive dialogue around the often-neglected issue of violence against boys, a subject that remains underrepresented in mainstream child protection discussions.

The event was held as part of the global Blue Umbrella Day Campaign, celebrated annually on April 16th, and aligned with the international movement to ensure that boys’ rights, safety, and dignity are protected. FISD’s partnership with KDU amplified the campaign’s reach, bridging academic insight with grassroots advocacy.

The campaign, titled Asphaleia 2025, served as a platform for:

  • Creating public awareness about the realities and consequences of violence against boys
  • Encouraging open dialogue among students, academics, and child rights professionals
  • Advocating for inclusive child protection policies that address gender-specific vulnerabilities

Speakers from both institutions highlighted the urgent need to dismantle cultural silences around male victimhood, strengthen reporting mechanisms, and promote environments where boys can speak out without fear or stigma.

The successful culmination of Asphaleia 2025 stands as a bold statement of commitment to child protection, and a reminder that ending violence against children means including the voices and experiences of boys, equally and urgently.

FISD extends its heartfelt thanks to the Faculty of Criminal Justice at KDU for their collaboration and shared vision in making this campaign a success. Together, we continue to push boundaries, shift mindsets, and advocate for a future where every child, regardless of gender, is safe, heard, and respected.
